Program Helps Local Businesses Implement Cell-Phone-While Driving Bans

Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine are launching a new program to help businesses in the San Diego region end the epidemic of distracted driving and the suffering and loss of life that can result. The program, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is the newest component of “Just Drive – Take Action against Distraction.” It will offer no-cost technical assistance to employers who are interested in crafting or strengthening bans on their employees using cell phones while driving.

Assessing Elderly Drivers:  Doctors and Law Enforcement Receive Training

Every day in America roughly 10,000 people turn age 65. To help keep roadways safe as America grays and to help preserve the freedom of mobility of older drivers, researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine are training law enforcement officers to recognize warning signs of impaired driving skills and to take appropriate, compassionate action. They are also training doctors to think more about their patients’ ability to drive safely with age.

Expanding their efforts to keep citizens safe on San Diego roadways, UC San Diego’s Training, Research and Education for Driving Safety (TREDS) program announced today that they are launching a new distracted driving education project called Just Drive – Take Action Against Distraction, a one hour class free of charge offered to businesses in San Diego.
