Richard S. Garfein, MPH, PhD

Research Consultant

Dr. Richard S. Garfein is an epidemiologist, educator, and public health innovator dedicated to understanding the causes of disease and translating that knowledge into impactful solutions. He serves as a Professor at the UCSD Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Longevity Science. Dr. Garfein earned his MPH from San Diego State University in 1985 and his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1997. With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Garfein has a wealth of expertise in designing and implementing both observational and interventional epidemiologic studies.

Dr. Garfein's research primarily focuses on airborne and bloodborne infections often associated with health disparities and substance use, including tuberculosis, HIV, and viral hepatitis in the US and abroad. Currently, he is a statistical consultant on two FMCSA-funded TREDS studies evaluating digital technologies to reduce the risk of fatal crashes involving commercial motor vehicles.
