Research
TREDS is actively engaged in research focusing on enhancing transportation safety. The team brings expertise in public health, medical engineering, law enforcement, and neuroscience to leverage a multidisciplinary approach to the understanding of mechanisms and opportunities to improve safety related to mobility. TREDS research encompasses three modes of transportation including passenger vehicles, commercial motor vehicles (trucks and buses), and railroad. Areas of interest include high risk driving behaviors (speeding, recklessness, non-seatbelt use), fatigue, distraction, impairment (drugs and alcohol), aging driver challenges, and trespassing (railroad).
Aging Drivers
Research addresses the roles of medical, behavioral, social, technological, and environmental factors in safe driving among older adults.
Cannabis and Driving
Research focuses on cannabis use, attitudes, and risky behaviors associated with use, as well as identifies effective messaging to promote safe driving.
Commercial Motor Vehicles
Research addresses CMV crashes by leveraging technology to understand risky driving behaviors and evaluate interventions to promote safe driving practices.
Railroad
Research identifies safety practices through focus groups, interviews, surveys, and crash analysis to inform prevention and mitigation strategies.
