Railroad

TREDS has partnered with railroad agencies to investigate employee well-being, focusing on fatigue and drowsiness, as well as trespassing behaviors and consequences. TREDS will identify patterns and prevention of trespassing on railroad property, both intentional and unintentional, and test strategies to mitigate these behaviors.

Research on Railroad Trespassing: Causes and Prevention

In partnership with a California railroad agency, TREDS aims to characterize the profiles and underlying causes of death and injury by railroad strikes by individuals who intentionally or unintentionally trespass on the railroad right-of-way. The goal is to gain insights that will shape approaches to improve railroad right-of-way safety.

Exploratory Analysis of Fatigue and Drowsiness of Regional Railroad Employees

TREDS collaborated with a California railroad agency to investigate the effects of fatigue, insufficient sleep, health concerns, and work characteristics on passenger rail safety. Through focus groups and surveys, this evaluation identified factors contributing to fatigue and drowsiness among both safety-critical and non-safety-critical personnel.
