About Us

The Transportation Research and Education for Driving Safety (TREDS) Center is committed to preventing crash-related morbidity and mortality by improving safe behaviors on the roadways.

Based at the UC San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health, TREDS operates under the leadership of Linda Hill, MD, MPH, Distinguished Professor, and Ryan Moran, MD, MPH, Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Public Health and School of Medicine.

Team members bring expertise in public health, medical engineering, law enforcement, and neuroscience to leverage a multi-disciplinary approach in understanding mechanisms and opportunities to improve safety related to mobility.

As a leader in curriculum development, programs are disseminated nationwide, addressing topics that include age and medically related driving impairments, distracted driving, pedestrian safety, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Target audiences include healthcare professionals, law enforcement, commercial drivers, and the general public, including vulnerable populations such as aging drivers and youth.

TREDS values the sharing of research, data, and information with the community and organizations through presentations at professional conferences and journal publications.

Grant funding comes from multiple sources including federal, state, and private entities, such as the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, California Department of Cannabis Control, and California Department of Transportation.
