Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), AI/AN traffic deaths are ⅔ higher than the overall U.S. rate and 80% higher than the California average when compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. The gap widens sharply among young drivers; AI/AN individuals ages 16–24 experience a fatality rate 69% higher than their non-AI/AN peers. These disparities underscore the urgent need for effective, culturally responsive traffic-safety programs that serve communities at greatest risk.

Honoring Our Ancestors, Protecting Our Future: Traffic Safety for Native American Youth

TREDS’ newest project features Native American peer trainers guiding each live workshop while sharing relatable experiences in a supportive atmosphere. Our Native American community deserves roads that are safe, respectful, and rooted in cultural values. The “Honoring Our Ancestors, Protecting Our Future” program was built by Native tribes, elders, artists, and youth. The result is a vibrant, multimedia experience that blends hard‑hitting traffic‑safety facts with the stories, songs, and wisdom of the ancestors. By stepping into this training, you become part of a growing network of young leaders who are protecting our roads, our families, and our future. All participants receive a certificate upon course completion.
