Jim Epperson

A retired California Highway Patrol (CHP) Deputy Commissioner with over 38 years of experience, Mr. Epperson is a nationally recognized authority regarding traffic safety, commercial transportation and autonomous vehicles. He’s been a member of state and national committees and organizations including the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and the California Freight Advisory Committee with subcommittee memberships on traffic safety and technical groups. His commercial vehicle experience extends from hands on inspections and training to authoring state regulations and assisting with federal regulations.

Within the CHP he was responsible for statewide traffic investigation and reconstruction, emergency response planning, commercial training and enforcement, and overall statewide highway transportation planning and safety. As Deputy Commissioner he was responsible for all administrative and field operations of the CHP. He initiated the CHP Autonomous Vehicle working Group and was a member of the States Autonomous Vehicle Visioning Group. Mr. Epperson is excited to continuing to pursue his passion for traffic safety by adding his expertise to the TREDS team.
