TREDS Director, Dr. Linda Hill, Featured in Media Interviews

January 24, 2025

Dr. Linda Hill, MD, MPH, Director of the Transportation Research and Education for Driving Safety (TREDS) center and Distinguished Professor at UC San Diego, was recently interviewed by both the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Qualcomm Institute. These interviews highlighted her research aimed at preventing transportation-related deaths through behavioral change and education, focusing on passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and railroads.

Dr. Hill and her team were awarded a $3.9 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration for a three-year project. This initiative will collaborate with passenger rail groups like Amtrak and Caltrain to analyze trespassing patterns and develop a toolkit to help agencies identify potential areas of future trespassing and implement mitigation strategies.

Another area of priority for Dr. Hill is commercial driving. TREDS has partnered with Drivewyze to pilot novel, in-cab Electronic Logging Device-based safety alerts for active work zones across California. Real-time work zone data is used to notify commercial drivers about upcoming hazardous road conditions, encouraging safer and more attentive driving in high-risk areas.

Additionally, TREDS has secured funding to develop a peer education program aimed at improving driving safety among Native American youth. The project will develop a driving safety curriculum tailored for Native Americans aged 16 to 24.
