Grants to UC San Diego Will Boost Roadway Safety and Native American Youth and Pedestrians

TREDS received two grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through NHTSA, to advance its educational programs. One grant supports the expansion of Honoring Our Ancestors, Protecting Our Future, a culturally grounded train-the-trainer program for Native American youth. The initiative is guided by Native educators, artists and elders and will train peer educators, evaluate program impact, and prepare for broader statewide implementation.

A second grant funds two self-paced online courses: TREDwise — Get There Safely, an interactive pedestrian safety course, and a Spanish-language version of the Emmy® Award-winning The Distraction Zone to address distracted driving. These digital resources aim to make safety education more inclusive and accessible, empowering communities with practical strategies to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and save lives.
